Introduction to Photoshop 2

1. Lasso Tool

  • Used to make freehand selections by drawing around the desired area.

  • Used for isolating irregular or custom shapes.

  • Allows for manual control and flexibility in selecting image parts.

  • There are three types:

    1. Lasso Tool – Freehand drawing for custom-shaped selections
    2. Polygonal Lasso Tool – Creates straight-edged selections by clicking points
    3. Magnetic Lasso Tool – Automatically snaps to edges based on contrast

2. Pen Tool

  • Great for outlining objects with sharp control and clean edges.

  • You plot points one by one — curves appear when you click and drag.

  • The fewer points you use, the smoother the path looks.

  • It’s not just for drawing — you can turn paths into selections too.

  • Path shapes:

    1. Straight lines

    2. U-shaped curves

    3. Simple S curves

    4. Complex S curves

3. Layers

  • Think of layers like transparent sheets stacked on top of each other.

  • Each layer holds different parts of your design — text, images, colors, etc.

  • You can edit, move, hide, or delete one layer without affecting the others.

  • Helps keep your work organized and makes editing easier.

2.0 Tutorial
WEEK 3: Paths, Masking, Layering

In Week 3's instructional session, we were given an in-depth demonstration on how to create a digital collage using Adobe Photoshop. I can now select the section of the image I want to cut out by first using the pen tool and changing the selection to "shape" rather than "path". Mr. Fauzi also introduced us to The Bézier Game to build our muscle memory in mastering the pen tool.

3.0 Practical

Out of the three designs I presented to Mr. Fauzi, the third one was selected as the final composition.

In our third tutorial class, Mr Fauzi had taught us on how to work for digital collage by using Adobe PhotoShop. On the class, Mr Fauzi had showed us on how to do the transform , the usage of the pen tool and etc...

4.0 Reflection

While working on the digital collage task, I enjoyed experimenting with different composition techniques, such as the golden ratio and the rule of thirds, to see how they could be applied to various layouts. It was also my first time using Adobe Photoshop to create a collage, and the experience really helped me become more familiar with the software’s interface and tools.

Overall, I’m quite satisfied with how the digital collages turned out, and I’ve gained both technical skills and design insights that will definitely support my future projects.
