1.0 Lecture
7 Principles of Poster Design
1. Emphasis
- Emphasis means to create a focus at a particular design element to signify its importance.
- Use emphasis to create focus point on designs.
2. Balance and alignment
- Balance in any composition occurs when all object in it have visual equilibrium.
- Use balance to create focus by using visual weight.
3. Contrast
- Contrast occurs when element in compositions have vastly different properties such as colour, size and shape.
- Use contrast to create focus, emphasis & interesting visual elements.
4. Repetition
- A component is repeated when others components with features similar to it are arrange in a same composition.
- Use repetition to unify a design and provide consistency.
5. Proportion
- Proportion is the relationship between object and reference to their size and visual weight.
- Use scale to make element larger giving it higher importance than smaller elements.
6. Movement
- Movement means guiding the user's eye to a predetermined path in a composition.
- Use movement to suggest how external forces can move or has move an object.
7. White Space
- White space is the empty space in any design. It is also know as negative space.
- Use white space to emphasis an element in a composition. Simply put, use it to create focus.

Poster Theme and Design Concept
Theme: Cultural Prosperity: Celebration - A Totem of Renewing Festive Culture
Category: Magic Lock Screen (Square & Vertical)
Title: Redlinked
Summary of design concept:
“Redlinked” represents the reignition of an ancient ceremonial flame—once the spiritual core of ancestral rituals, now burning anew to awaken cultural memory, festive spirit, and a shared sense of identity. This crimson flame flows like a sacred thread through time, symbolizing cultural rebirth and the unbroken transmission of heritage. Surrounding the flame are emblematic cultural symbols: dragons guarding prosperity and tradition, heritage buildings evoking the depth of cultural roots, red papercuts expressing the vitality of folk art, and sacred ritual objects like incense burners and silk drapes that recreate the solemnity of traditional ceremonies. Together, these elements form a powerful visual totem of celebration, unity, and cultural renewal in the modern age.
4.0 Reflection
The lecture on poster design principles was a helpful guide in approaching this task. Applying concepts such as composition, contrast, and harmony allowed me to create a more balanced and visually appealing design. Through this poster, I aim to communicate my interpretation of the "renewal of life" theme and develop a concept that is both thoughtful and impactful.
