WEEK 10: Intro to After Effects

What is After Effects?
Adobe After Effects is a 2.5D animation software used for animation, visual effects, and motion picture compositingAfter Effects is used in film, TV, and web video creation.

This software is used in the post-production phase, and has hundreds of effects that can be used to manipulate imagery. This allows you to combine layers of video and images into the same scene.

Adobe After Effects takes a different approach for creating movement. Motion graphics animation works by manipulating vector and rasterised art to create and tell a story. You can integrate physical based media as well through photographs and videography.

Compositing Layers in Photoshop
Basically Photoshop is a platform to compositing the layers. All the layers need to be arranged and renamed accordingly so that it will be organise and easy to be animated in After Effects.

Compositing Layers in After Effects

Adobe After Effects is a digital visual effects, motion graphics, and compositing application. Basically we can import elements such as images, video, vector and more into After Effects.

All the layer elements need to be organised and synchronised to the external software platforms such as Photoshop & Illustrator. After Effects files does not embed its media, it links to it.

        Trying out Animation

Figure 3.0 Trying to animate the square's size

I decided to try animating one of the lock screens using After Effects to evaluate how well the animation works in terms of visual appeal, overall fit with the design, and its potential to be developed further. This process helps me understand whether the animated version enhances the user experience and aligns with the overall aesthetic I’m aiming for. It also allows me to test the flexibility of the layout and explore different motion techniques to see what’s possible within the constraints of the design.

        4.0 REFLECTION

I tried animating one of the lock screens in After Effects to see how well it works in motion. This test helped me get a better idea of whether the animation fits the overall design, looks good visually, and has the potential to be developed further. It was also a way for me to explore what After Effects can do and how I can use its tools to enhance my ideas. Although it’s just a rough test, it gave me more clarity on how animation can bring my concept to life and make it more engaging.
